9111-288 "Indian Joe" at Menucha (1 1/4 mile east of Corbett, Oregon). Indian Joe was a Hawaiian emigrant who worked as a servant for the Painter family who owned this estate. When the Painter family sold the estate to the Meiers (of Meier and Frank department store in Portland), the new owners allowed him to continue to live in his cabin through his retirement. This picture was taken around 1920 by Clyde Putnam, the manager of Meier & Frank’s camera department.
