Opened in June, 1960, The Way Out was located under the Hawthorne Bridge at 240 SE Hawthorne. Live modern jazz was the featured entertainment. One of the owners was artist Louis Bunce, who decorated the restaurant with his own paintings. Weekly live radio broadcasts from the stage brought the crowds in. The front window was painted by artist Jim Smith, another one of the owners.
